Your Ultrasound at WWWW

How Transabdominal and Transvaginal Scans Work Together

At WWWW, your scan is always tailored to your clinical needs. In many cases, we may use both transabdominal (TA)and transvaginal (TV) ultrasound during the same appointment. These two approaches provide complementary views that help us build a complete, accurate picture of your pelvic health.

Why We May Start With a Transabdominal (TA) Scan

A transabdominal scan is performed by gently moving a probe across the surface of your lower abdomen. It gives a broad overview of the pelvic organs and helps us assess:

  • General position and size of the uterus and ovaries
  • Any large fibroids or masses
  • The relationship between pelvic organs
  • The bladder and surrounding structures

TA scans are especially useful when:

  • A wider field of view is needed
  • The patient prefers a non-internal option
  • There is free fluid or a large mass to assess
  • The uterus is positioned high or tilted in a way that may limit TV views

Why We Often Recommend a Transvaginal (TV) Scan

Using both scans in combination allows us to:

  • Begin with a general overview (TA)
  • Then perform a focused, high-resolution assessment (TV)
  • Adapt the approach depending on anatomy, comfort, and clinical findings

In many cases, starting with a TA scan helps determine whether a TV scan is needed and which areas to focus on. Together, they improve diagnostic confidence and reduce the need for repeat scans.

Chaperones at WWWW

Supportive, Professional, and Always by Your Side

At WWWW, we know that coming for a scan — especially an internal one — can sometimes feel a little daunting. That’s why we make sure you’re never alone. A female chaperone is always present during any intimate or transvaginal examination — not just for safety, but to support your experience and ensure everything feels comfortable, respectful, and clear.

What is a Chaperone?

A chaperone is a trusted member of our clinical team who stays with you during your scan to:

  • Help you feel at ease
  • Listen and support you throughout the appointment
  • Assist the clinician to make sure everything runs smoothly
  • Reinforce the information you’re given
  • Be present to ensure the very best patient experience

They are there for you as much as they are for the clinician — and many patients find them a welcome source of calm and clarity.

Why Do We Always Use Chaperones?

We believe that good healthcare is about more than expertise — it’s about kindness, reassurance, and trust.
Having a chaperone present helps us:

  • Keep your comfort and dignity at the centre of the appointment
  • Ensure nothing is misheard, misunderstood, or rushed
  • Offer an extra layer of support if you have questions or concerns
  • Maintain transparency and professional standards at all times

It’s also in line with best practice guidance from the General Medical Council (GMC) — but more importantly, it’s the care standard we would want for ourselves.

What to Expect on the Day

  • When you arrive, your clinician will introduce the chaperone and explain their role
  • You’ll be given time and privacy to get ready for your scan
  • The chaperone will remain present and attentive throughout
  • If you feel unsure, have a question, or need a moment — just say so. We’re here to help.

If you’d like anything explained again or clarified, your chaperone can help with that too. Think of them as your
advocate in the room — someone whose sole focus is making sure you feel comfortable, informed, and cared for.

At WWWW, you’ll never be rushed, never be left alone during an intimate scan, and never be asked to
accept anything you’re not comfortable with. Your experience matters just as much as your results — and our chaperones are here to make sure of that.
