Consent for Taking Blood Tests
At West Wales Women’s Wellbeing (WWWW), your consent and understanding are of utmost importance to us. Blood tests are an essential part of assessing your health and planning effective treatment. By reading this guide and attending your appointment, you acknowledge the following:
What is a Blood Test and How is it Done?
A blood test is a simple and quick procedure used to assess various aspects of your health. During the test:
- A small sample of blood is taken, usually from a vein in your arm.
- This is done using a fine needle and is typically completed within a few minutes.
- A tourniquet is used around your upper arm. This helps to temporarily slow blood flow and makes the vein more prominent, making it easier to collect the sample safely and efficiently.
- The area is cleaned with an alcohol wipe before the needle is inserted to minimise any risk of infection.
- You may feel a slight pinch during the process, but discomfort is minimal.
- After the blood is taken, the needle is removed, and pressure is applied to the site. A small plaster is then placed to protect the area.
- The sample is then sent to the laboratory for analysis, where it is tested for specific health markers based on your individual needs.
Blood tests are a safe and routine procedure with very low risk. Occasionally, you may experience slight bruising or tenderness around the area where the blood was taken—this usually resolves within a couple of days. Our team is trained to make the process as comfortable as possible.
Aftercare Instructions
To ensure proper healing and minimise any discomfort, we recommend the following aftercare:
- Keep the plaster on for a minimum of 30 minutes after the test.
- Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity with that arm for the rest of the day.
- Apply gentle pressure if you notice any slight bleeding after removing the plaster.
- If you experience bruising, it is typically mild and fades within a few days. Applying a cool compress can help reduce any tenderness.
- Stay hydrated, as this can help with recovery and prevent light-headedness.

If you experience any ongoing pain, significant swelling, or signs of infection (such as redness or warmth), please contact us promptly for support.
