Pink/Blue Early Gender Blood Test: Early pregnancy gender testing from 6 weeks
At West Wales Women’s Wellbeing, we are pleased to offer the Concepto Diagnostics Pink/Blue Early Gender Blood Test, providing a simple and non-invasive way to find out your baby’s sex from as early as 6 weeks of pregnancy.
Using a small sample of maternal blood, the test looks for Y chromosome DNA to determine whether your baby is likely to be male or female. This means you can find out your baby’s sex much earlier than you would through a routine ultrasound scan.
A simple blood test, with an early answer
The Pink/Blue Early Gender Blood Test is a non-invasive blood test that requires only a small sample of blood from the mother.
The test looks for small amounts of fetal DNA circulating naturally in your bloodstream. If Y chromosome DNA is detected, the result indicates that you are likely to be having a boy. If Y chromosome DNA is not detected, the result indicates that you are likely to be having a girl.
The test is designed specifically to determine fetal sex. It is not a screening test for chromosomal conditions or other health conditions.
From 6 weeks of pregnancy

From 6 weeks of pregnancy, you can have the blood test and find out your baby’s sex, without having to wait until a later pregnancy scan.
Accurate dating is important when testing this early in pregnancy, which is why an ultrasound scan is included before every blood test as part of the package.
More than a blood test
Every Pink/Blue appointment includes a detailed ultrasound scan before the blood sample is taken, to confirm:
- That the pregnancy is developing appropriately.
- The stage of pregnancy.
- That the baby’s heartbeat is visible.
- Whether there is one baby or more than one.
- An early assessment of the baby’s anatomy appropriate to the stage of pregnancy.
This helps ensure the test is carried out at the right stage of pregnancy and provides valuable information about your pregnancy before the blood sample is taken.

What should I expect?
Your appointment will begin with a discussion about your pregnancy and the test.
An ultrasound scan will be performed before the blood sample is taken. This allows your clinician to assess the pregnancy and confirm the stage of pregnancy before proceeding with the blood test.
The blood test involves taking a small sample of blood from your arm, similar to a routine blood test.
The sample is then sent for laboratory analysis, with your result provided in accordance with the expected turnaround time for the test.
Important information
The Pink/Blue Early Gender Blood Test is designed to determine the sex of the baby. It is not a diagnostic test and does not screen for Down syndrome, Edwards’ syndrome, Patau’s syndrome or other chromosomal conditions.
